Hello! My name is Anne. My favourity holiday is Halloween and I would like to talk about it with you.
The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.
In the ninth century Pope Gregory IV designated November 1 as ‘All Saints’ Day and October 31 as a time of vigil, or “Hallowed Evening.”
Today children love this day because they dress up and go from house to house collecting candy. Children tell each other eerie ghost stories and some families turn their homes into haunted houses. Horror movies abound on television. And everybody like pumpkin pie best of all.
Oh, I know it’s too early to speak about Halloween. But our time is so fast. Now is summer (July) tomorrow here will be fall.
