HOW TO PICK PROPER PUMPKIN!
Do you know how to pick the proper pumpkin?
Some tips on picking, carving or even eating your pumpkin:
To tell if a pumpkin is ripe, look for a hard, strong stem and an allover orange colour. A tinge of green is an indication that the pumpkins is not fully ripe.
Sugar or pie pumpkins are the best for making pies; ornamental pumpkins are the best for carving.
For easier carving and painting choose a pumpkin that has a thin skin and a smooth surface.
For use after harvest, store pumpkins in a cool dry place at 50 to 60 degrees. Place them in a garage or barn if a freeze or heavy frost is predicted. Frost will leave a mark on the pumpkin.
If you plan to roast pumpkin seeds, consider buying a larger pumpkin that produces bigger seeds. Wash the seeds and pat them dry, then place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Salt, if desired. Pre - heat the oven, set 350 degrees and bake for four - six minutes or until toasty.
If you've waited to get your pumpkin until the week before Halloween, there's good news and bad news.
The bad news is that it has been an early year for pumpkins and most of them have already been picked - and at some farm markets, picked over.
The good news is that this year's was a bumper crop, so there should still be plenty to go around if you look.
We'll meet on the Halloween!!! BYE!
